It has been suggested in the French media that Celtic are one of the teams 'ready to make a move' for the Ivory Coast international.
This summer, Martin O'Neill could be looking for profiles that are missing in the Celtic squad. So far, the only fresh addition has been the signing of Camilo Duran from Qarabag. Hopefully, the Colombian striker is able to solve the Hoops' problems going forward, as they scored 39 fewer league goals last season.
On the other hand, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been brought back on a one-year deal. Celtic are believed to be keen on continuing with Kelechi Iheanacho and Marcelo Saracchi as well, if deals can be agreed.
On the other hand, the midfield could be about to undergo a transformation this summer, with both arrivals and exits lined up.
An Ivory Coast international has caught the eye of Celtic amid all this. And if the club are able to sign him, that would add a very different kind of profile to their midfield department.
Celtic ready to make move for Ivory Coast international
According to Foot Mercato, three major European clubs are ready to make a move for Mory Gbane of Reims. West Ham United, Celtic and Trabzonspor are all genuinely interested in his services.
Faced with this growing interest, the Stade de Reims management is not opposed to the idea of an exit this summer if a substantial offer comes their way.
What kind of transfer fee would it take to convince Reims to part ways with Gbane? That has not been made clear.
Would Gbane be a good signing for Celtic?
Naturally, a lot of fans would raise their eyebrows at the idea of signing a player from the second division of French football. But the data suggests that Gbane could be a solid addition to this Celtic team.
He is excellent at winning back possession. But it is his comfort with the ball at his feet that has earned him so much interest.
Gbane is in the 80th percentile or higher for successful dribbles, touches, passes, accurate long balls, defensive contributions, interceptions, headers, recoveries and even goals. He is in the 93rd percentile for aerial duels won.
That paints the picture of a complete defensive midfielder, a role Celtic have struggled to fill for years now.
It has not been for a lack of trying though. Ismaila Soro started for a while under Neil Lennon. Oliver Abildgaard and Tomoki Iwata were brought in during the Ange Postecoglou era.
Nobody was able to establish themselves though. Perhaps it is because of the fact that Celtic do not need a traditional defensive midfielder in most domestic games, when they are on the front foot 90% of the time.
That being said, the Hoops can certainly do with a physical presence in the middle of the park when it comes to Europe and in big games in the Premiership as well.
