It is being reported in the Scottish media that Celtic want to bring back the defender in this summer transfer window.
Celtic will be looking to strengthen all across the pitch in the summer transfer window. That should involve bringing in fresh faces in several positions. But that could also mean bringing back some familiar ones.
There are a number of positions where Celtic could do with some depth. One of them might very well be right-back.
Alistair Johnston is probably the best right-back in the league when available. But the issue is, the Canadian international has proven to be injury-prone.
Johnston has dealt with multiple long-term injuries in recent years. So, just like Kieran Tierney, Celtic should have a capable cover option for him at all times as well.
Julian Araujo is someone who did an excellent job during his spell at Celtic. He was the only signing of the Wilfried Nancy era. And within a short time, he was able to become a fan favourite.
Araujo is someone who seemed to get the Celtic fanbase. Most were hoping to see him get signed on a permanent basis soon after his arrival on loan from Bournemouth.
But Araujo would pick up a season-ending injury and did not feature in the last few months. In that time, his name faded away a bit and there are no longer as many calls for him to be signed. That does not mean Celtic have forgotten about the Mexican international though.
According to the Daily Record, Celtic were understood to be keen to hold discussions over the possibility of a season-long loan, or a potential permanent switch, for Araujo. The Mexican international and Bournemouth are considering their options.
Araujo could prove to be an excellent signing for Celtic. But it will depend on the transfer fee that Bournemouth would want as well as the role that the Mexican international would be looking for.
It is very possible that he might want to be a regular starter. But are we certain that he would do so ahead of Johnston?
Then again, as we said, Johnston's injury record means that he is not someone who the club can rely on to deliver for the entire season. Anthony Ralston deserves a ton of credit for the job he did this season, filling in when both were out, coming in from the cold in an important part of the campaign.
It remains to be seen how this will play out. Araujo's short stint at the club was wonderful. Most fans would like to see it continue, whether on loan or on a permanent basis. If it does not, they would wish him the best.
