Celtic have been told to put in a transfer bid for the 17-goal forward this summer.
One thing Celtic missed for the majority of the 25/26 season was a consistent goal-scoring forward. Their top scorer in the campaign was Benjamin Nygren, who played most of his football in a midfield three. That should tell you all you need to know about the Hoops' troubles up top.
Late in the season, we saw the difference that a good forward line can make. Daizen Maeda found the form of his life.
The Japanese forward was Henrik Larsson-esque in the final few weeks of the season. Bicycle kicks, chips over the goalkeeper, instinctive box finishes, he did it all.
On the other hand, Kelechi Iheanacho proved himself to be the ultimate impact sub. He scored multiple winners after coming off the bench, which kept Celtic within touching distance of Hearts, before finally winning the league on the final day of the campaign.
Hearts have already been weakened with the Rangers signing Lawrence Shankland. And now, Celtic have been tipped to sign another of their forwards.
According to 67 Hail Hail, Tony Watt backed Celtic to make a move for Claudio Braga, as he told Clyde 1:
“I would be going to Hearts and putting a bid on the table for Braga.
“He showed after his first season what he can do in this country.
“The only thing is that Hearts are in a position where they don’t need the money, so Celtic can’t go and overpower them.
“Rangers, of course, got lucky with a clause in the Shankland deal, which, again, is a fantastic signing. He will be Scotland’s number nine at the World Cup.
“But I think Celtic should be going and buying the best players in the league. Whether that’s Maswanhise, Braga, Elliot Watt or Elijah Just.
“They need to be going for these guys over Mvuka, Adamu and Balikwisha, because of experience in Scotland, knowing the tempo of the game and how physical it can be. How much quality there is, even though it gets spoken down on, is key and Celtic can’t afford for people needing two, three or four months to adapt.
“They can do one or two, but they can’t have four or five signings taking three or four months to get up to speed.”
That does make a lot of sense. One of the issues that Celtic faced last season was that they signed players who struggled to adapt to the Scottish game.
Several players came in but were simply not good enough to make a contribution. Most of them stopped even getting minutes after underwhelming displays. Others continued to play despite struggling because Celtic did not have a ton of options in every position on the pitch.
If Celtic do sign players already in Scotland, that would be one thing that would be sorted from the start. The arrivals will know what it is like to play in the Premiership and would be adjusted to the pace and physicality of the league.
Of course, Braga enjoyed a tremendous debut season with Hearts. He managed to score 17 goals and provided six assists as well.
So, it is not hard to understand why Celtic have been tipped to sign him. One would imagine that his numbers would improve further in a team that creates more chances, normally.
Then there would be a ton of fans who would feel that Celtic need to aim higher. That point of view is understandable too.
Let's also not forget that Maeda is expected to leave this summer. So, the Hoops will be losing the player who was most instrumental in their late charge in the league title race. That makes the need for a goalscorer even more urgent.
