The Celtic board have made another mistake to make things more difficult for Martin O'Neill this summer.

A lot of times, the decision-making of the Celtic board has come under the microscope. And it might be time to add another instance to that alarmingly fast-growing list of errors.

Celtic need to strengthen in a lot of positions this summer. One of them is their forward line. The Hoops scored 39 fewer league goals last season than the previous one.

So, the hope is that the club will sign a few strikers this summer. Hopefully ones who are in good form and can hit the ground running.

But on the other hand, for some reason, it looks like they have put themselves in a position where they could lose one of the few reliable goalscoerers they had last season. It is a decision that will only make things tougher for Martin O'Neill, who already had a mountain to climb.

Celtic Make Another Questionable Decision

According to a report from The Scottish Sun, Celtic's option for another year for Kelechi Iheanacho has expired. The striker is currently back in Nigeria, training on his own.

Iheanacho is believed to be keen on staying at Celtic. Meanwhile, O’Neill would also be happy to keep him. But so far, no concrete talks have taken place over a new deal.

Unfortunately, Celtic have made things difficult for themselves by not taking up that option. They are no longer in control of the situation.

It has also been claimed that Turkish clubs are making lucrative offers looking to sign Iheanacho. Other clubs across Europe are interested as well.

Why Celtic Must Keep Kelechi Iheanacho

Yes, we know that Iheanacho faced his injury problems last season. At the end of the day, he played just 890 minutes of football.

You cannot measure a player's impact by his time on the pitch though. It is what he does with it. Ihenacho used his to win Celtic games of football.

Iheanacho scored 9 goals in the 890 minutes of football he played. He also had an assist to his name.

Many of those nine goals were late winners as well, which came at the absolute most vital moments possible for Celtic. The importance of someone capable of delivering under such difficult circumstances cannot be overlooked.

It is also very plausible that O'Neill made a tactical decision to not give more playing time to Iheanacho, even when close to full fitness, because he preferred him off the bench, so that he could take advantage of the opposition's tired legs. And he did so more often than not.

All things considered, Ihenacho was instrumental in winning Celtic the league title last season. And someone like him around would be excellent for the club.
