The ownership group of Hearts Football Club have released a statement about officials before meeting Celtic in what will be a title decider.

The second John Beaton headed to the VAR monitor, it was clear that there was going to be late controversy in the game between Celtic and Motherwell. That is exactly what happened when a penalty was awarded deep into added time. Kelechi Iheanacho converted to make it 3-2 and send the away fans behind the goal into a frenzy.

The result means that Celtic will be champions of Scotland if they can beat Hearts at home on the final day of the league season. Derek McInnes' side just need to avoid defeat, as they sit a point clear.

Many associated with Hearts are not happy with how things played out at Fir Park though.

We have already covered the comments made by Derek McInnes with regard to the penalty kick that was awarded to Celtic by Beaton.

Now the Foundation of Hearts, who have 75.5% of the voting rights in the club, have released a statement as well.

It read:  "All of us at the Foundation of Hearts congratulate our magnificent team and manager, Derek McInnes, on their outstanding achievements in this momentous season, and urge all Heart of Midlothian supporters to get right behind them for Saturday’s final game of the campaign.

"We have, however, been extremely concerned by a number of refereeing and VAR decisions across the last two rounds of fixtures, which have had a significant impact on outcomes for Hearts and others. That this has occurred at such a crucial stage of the season is particularly disappointing. We understand that the club shares these concerns and has made representations to the football authorities seeking clarification on recent decisions.

"At a time when Scottish football is subject to heightened scrutiny, both nationally and internationally, it is important that confidence in officiating standards is maintained.

"We therefore call on those responsible for the officiating of Saturday’s match to ensure that the highest standards of decision-making are applied, so that the game is decided by the players on the pitch and the team is given the fair opportunity it has earned."

Now, did Beaton make the wrong decision by handing the penalty to Celtic? Of course, the timing of it and the context in the title race mean that it was always going to be controversial. But that should not stop a referee from making the right decision.

If you look at the video of the incident, logically, there does not seem to be a way that the ball does not make contact with some part of his hand by the way it ends up covering his forehead region.

Just considering the surface area of the ball, there must have been some sort of contact.

How much? Well, we are not sure about that. Considering how far the ball went, there had to have been plenty behind the header as well.

Our guess would be that the ball touched the player's hand first before it was headed away in the same sequence.

Anyways, what is done is done. Celtic cannot waste any time dwelling on that decision. That one went their way. Plenty other ones have not in the past.

The fact of the matter is that they now face Hearts on the final matchday of the Premiership season with a win required to secure the title.

Martin O'Neill's side have done brilliantly to claw their way back into this position. They have been squeezing out wins consistently, even if by the narrowest of margins. But now, it is about getting over the finish line.
