A high-profile Portuguese manager is now being linked with Celtic out of nowhere, with Martin O'Neill set to step down at the end of the season.

It has been wonderful to see Martin O'Neill back at Celtic this season. For younger fans, it has been an opportunity to understand why the Northern Irishman is held in such high esteem by the Parkhead faithful. For the older generation, it has been a chance to take a walk down memory lane and enjoy a taste of nostalgia.

Of course, at Celtic, winning is the most important thing. O'Neill has done a decent bit of that. And if not for Wilfried Nancy's 33-day reign, he might have had the Hoops in control of this title race.

As things stand, Celtic are in a poor position. They are five points behind Hearts and two adrift of the Rangers with just seven league games left to be played. It is far from impossible, but the Hoops have left themselves a lot of work to do, that is for sure.

In the Scottish Cup, they are in the semi-finals, having gotten past the Rangers at Ibrox in the previous round. They will be taking on St Mirren, who got the better of Nancy's Celtic in the League Cup final, at Hampden Park. Hopefully, O'Neill will guide the Hoops to some silverware by the end of the campaign.

In the long run, O'Neill is not the answer. He is 74 years old and is scheduled to step down as interim manager at the end of the season. While you can never say never in football, it does not feel like he will continue as manager of Celtic beyond this season. So, let's enjoy the last eight or nine games the club have him for.

Who will be the one replacing him? Well, quite a few names have emerged as potential candidates over the last few months.

Robbie Keane has done a great job at Ferencvaros. The same can be said for Jens Berthel Askou at Motherwell. Craig Bellamy was thought to be a potential candidate as well, but he seems keen to stay with Wales. Roberto Martinez's name did the rounds early but has faded away lately.

Now, a new name has emerged. According to Football Insider, Celtic have been linked with a move for Bruno Lage ahead of the summer. The Portuguese manager is now emerging as one of the favourites.

Lage has a decent CV. He certainly has a lot more experience than the likes of Keane, Bellamy and Askou.

Lage has had two stints as Benfica boss. He won four trophies with the Portuguese giants, including one league title. So, he will know about the pressure that comes with being at a big club. That is important, as we learned during the Nancy era, as the Frenchman did not seem to completely understand the expectations he was dealing with.

Lage has also managed in the Premier League with Wolves. And while his ending their might not have been great, at one point, he did have them competing for European spots.

It is also worth mentioning that things have not exactly gotten better for Wolves since Lage left. They have been in and around the relegation zone for a while, and currently sit at 20th, and will most likely be relegated this time around.

Lage also had a short stint in Brazil with Botafogo, which will go down as the only true failure on his resume.
