Martin O'Neill has held open the Parkhead door for what would be an unexpected Celtic return this summer.
Celtic have been handed a major blow today as it has emerged that Kelechi Iheanacho is heading to Turkey. The club did have the option to extend his deal by another year but did not take it up, instead negotiating over new terms.
A new deal had been offered to Iheanacho as well. But the Nigerian striker has seemingly chosen to head to Turkey instead.
This raises some serious questions about the club's recruitment. They have let slip someone who was vital to their double win last season, scoring numerous crunch goals coming off the bench.
For many, this simply is not acceptable. Most had thought that Iheanacho staying was a foregone conclusion. It was clearly not the case. And that has left Celtic's striker options paper-thin, especially with Daizen Maeda also expected to depart.
While Iheanacho won't be returning to Celtic, there have been suggestions that an unexpected return could be on the cards.
Martin O'Neill hints at unexpected Celtic return
According to the Daily Record, Martin O'Neill has made it clear that he is open to the idea of Julian Araujo returning this summer. He said:
“I would keep it open, because you don’t know what could happen.
“If it was all within our scope it’s something I would definitely look at, because he would be up for the fight.
“I haven’t been in contact with him for a few weeks, but overall I don’t know what Bournemouth’s position in.”
Of course, Araujo spent only a short time at Celtic last season. But even then, he was able to win over the supporters and establish himself as a fan favourite.
He showed his quality on the pitch and seemed to get what it means to be a Celtic player, something that not everybody does, even after years of wearing the shirt.
Unfortunately, his loan spell was stalled due to an injury that kept him out of action for the last few months of the season. There was not even a proper goodbye.
Most fans would welcome Araujo back with open arms. But how much real impact would such a move have on Celtic?
Would Julian Araujo be a good signing?
If Alistair Johnston remains fit, it is very likely that he would be the number one option at right-back.
Would Araujo be open to the idea of playing the role of a backup at Celtic? Time shall tell.
Also, would Bournemouth entertain the idea of another loan deal? One would imagine that the Cherrie would prefer a permanent transfer.

Anyways, if the opportunity presents itself, Celtic should definitely consider the idea. He is a good player and such characters are almost important in a team.
That being said, on the pitch, his arrival won't have the same impact as that of Iheanacho could have. Missing out on the Nigerian striker is something that club could end up regretting numerous times over the course of the coming season.
While clubs around them continue to strengthen, Celtic have once again found a way to make the squad weaker.
