It looks like Celtic might be close to agreeing on another deal this summer.
The World Cup has flown by. The semi-finals are set. And there is only a week left before the tournament comes to a close. Clubs have already started their pre-season training camps as well, including Celtic.
It will be very interesting to see what Martin O'Neill can achieve with this team with a full pre-season under his belt. While the Northern Irishman was immense at getting results last season, the quality of football was not always the best.
There is a need to bring in some quality players as well. So far, Camilo Duran has been signed from Qarabag.
The Hoops might not be far away from adding another striker to their squad, but this time around, it would be a familiar face.
Celtic Close to Deal with Striker
According to George Tsarouchas, Kelechi Iheanacho has turned down offers from Qatar and Turkey.
Iheanacho held talks with the Hoops in order to sign a new 2-year contract. Returning to Celtic is now the most likely scenario.
Of course, Iheanacho spent the previous season on loan at Celtic but that deal has now run out and the option to extend it automatically has also expired. Yet, it looks like there is interest from both parties in agreeing to an extension.
Iheanacho clearly enjoyed his time at Celtic last season, even though he did not make many starts. A large part of that was down to fitness issues.
At the same time, it might very well have been O'Neill's strategy as well. Iheanacho found so much success coming off the bench and scoring vital goals late on that there was no real need to tweak that. Do not fix it if it is not broken.
Signing Iheanacho would be the Right Step
To be very honest, signing Iheanacho is a bit of a no-brainer for Celtic, especially as it looks like Daizen Maeda could be heading for the exit door.
Obviously, there is the experience of Iheanacho that needs to be considered. But even more importantly, he has shown he can perform at Celtic, which is important.
Duran is a highly rated striker and scored five goals in the Champions League last season. But we do not know whether it will translate to Celtic or not.
Not every striker is capable of dealing with low blocks week in and week out, and keep scoring goals. So, at the very least, Celtic need one who has proven he can do that, and Iheanacho has.
