The University of Connecticut men's basketball team finished the regular season at 27-4 and 17-3 inside the Big East Conference.
As a result, the Huskies finished second in the league standings and earned the No. 2 seed in the league tournament, which begins on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.
While UConn absolutely has the ability to win the entire tournament, recent history is not on their side. As noted by the FS1 broadcast during Saturday's 68-62 loss against Marquette, the No. 1 seed has won the last three league tournaments, which is bad news for Dan Hurley's team.
Connecticut will open up on Thursday against the winner of Xavier and Marquette (7:00 p.m. ET).
Should the final come down to UConn against No. 1 St. John's, the two teams split the regular season matchups. Each team won their home matchup, and while Madison Square Garden is listed as a neutral site in this format, a potential third contest would be right in the Red Storm's backyard - and that's where St. John's beat UConn earlier this season.
The tournament could have additional meaning for UConn as well: The Huskies likely need to win the tournament in order to secure a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Even then it wouldn't be a certainty, but failing to win it would certainly result in being on the No. 2 line.
Hurley was fined $25,000 for his actions at the end of the Marquette game. In the waning seconds, with the Huskies down two, he thought Silas Demary was fouled going to the basket. No call was given and Hurley erupted at the official. The game broadcast thought he potentially made contact with the official, but the Big East said they could not prove that.
--The UConn women's basketball team dominated Georgetown in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament on Saturday afternoon. The 32-0 Huskies will advance to Sunday's semifinal where they will play Creighton at 2:30 p.m. ET.
In addition to beating the Hoyas, the Huskies wrapped up a number of league accolades earlier this week.
The Huskies remain the heavy favorite to win their second consecutive national title.
--The UConn women's hockey team captured the Hockey East championship on Saturday night with a 2-1 double-overtime win against Northeastern. As a result, they have earned the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The game made history as well, recording the biggest attendance in Women's Hockey East final history (2,168).
