After weeks of courtship, the Huskies men's basketball team earned a commitment from Texas Tech transfer LeJuan Watts
The Washington Huskies men's basketball team was expected to be one of the most active teams in the transfer portal this offseason among Big Ten squads. So far that prediction has come to fruition.
The Huskies haven't had a 100% success rate at landing players they've been interested in. Senior center Drew Fielder committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide after taking a visit with Washington.
However, the Huskies were able to recently land another front court player and one of their earlier targets of the transfer portal window.
Texas Tech transfer and senior forward LeJuan Watts announced his commitment to Washington on Wednesday.
Watts announced his commitment on a post on his personal Instagram account (@wattslejuan).
Watts had previously been on campus for a visit with the Huskies on April 11.
While Watts was on campus, he stopped by the Washington football team's practice session to greet his younger brother, DeSean Watts.
The younger Watts played defensive line for the Huskies and had committed to the school this offseason from Sacramento State.
Beyond his familial ties to the university, the elder of the Watts siblings also has experience playing in the Pacific Northwest.
The soon-to-be-senior played with Eastern Washington in Cheney, Wash., from 2023-24 and Washington State in Pullman, Wash., in '24-25.
After his two years in the Evergreen State, Watts transferred to Texas Tech. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound forward played 33 games and started 28 with the Red Raiders last season. He averaged 11.8 points on 43.3% shooting, pulled in six rebounds and dished 2.4 assists per game.
Watts was the fourth acquisition via the transfer portal for the Huskies this offseason. The other three were: senior point guard Ryan Beasley, senior shooting guard Parker Friedrichsen and senior forward/wing Steele Venters.
The addition of Watts gives Washington nine-to-ten players on the roster. Sophomore forward Jasir Rencher's status for next season is still in question after he missed the second half of the year with a heart condition he underwent a procedure for.
With the way the current roster is constructed, the starting five for the 2026-27 season would like be: Beasley (point guard); junior Wesley Yates III (shooting guard); Venters (small forward/wing); Watts (power forward) and junior Lathan Sommerville III (center). Friedrichsen would likely come off the bench as a 3-point specialist/defensive wing.
In that hypothetical starting five, Yates and Sommerville would be the only starters returning from last season.
Other notes
-- The transfer portal window closed Tuesday (April 21). But players already in the portal can still commit to new schools. Here's a list of players the Huskies are/could be interested in to fill out the rest of the roster:
