Eddie Howe is said to be a huge fan of the midfielder and nearly signed him in the summer of 2023, but the club and he chose to pursue and secure a deal for Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali.
It is clear that Newcastle, along with Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester United, to name just a few, believe that Felix Nmecha would be an excellent addition to Eddie Howe's squad going into next season, perhaps enhanced even more by the recent links surrounding Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal and Sandro Tonali to Spurs.

However, no matter how much interest Newcastle United may have in Felix Nmecha, according to Keith Downie, one issue remains a major stumbling block, and that is the fee that Borussia Dortmund would command for the German midfielder.
Keith Downie states that Felix Nmecha has a release clause in his contract of around £73.5 million, and due to Newcastle's transfer model, partly down to FFP restrictions, Newcastle cannot and will not be able to pay that fee.
Therefore, for Felix Nmecha to make a move to the North East of England, Borussia Dortmund would need to be willing to accept a lower release clause than the one that has been reported.
Mixed Reports
The slightly off part of this report is the release clause part. This is because it has been reported heavily that while Felix Nmecha does in fact have a release clause in his Borussia Dortmund deal, it is not active until next summer; this summer, his transfer fee is completely negotiable and can be set by Borussia Dortmund at whatever figure they want, which contradicts Keith Downie’s report.
This would go hand in hand with reports that have also emerged today from GOAL that suggest that Borussia Dortmund have placed a €100 million price tag on Felix Nmecha this summer.

Due to the sheer amount of interest from almost every elite football club in Europe, Borussia Dortmund, at least this summer, are firmly in control. They have the power to ask for as high a fee as they want for their star midfielder, with the German giants able to start a ‘bidding war’ between all interested parties if they so wish.
Therefore, if Newcastle are unwilling to even pay the £73.5 million that Keith Downie has reported could be the release clause, then the chances of them securing the midfielder this summer seem slim to none.
