Domestic dominance meets continental desperation at the Dragão as two struggling giants battle to ignite their European campaigns and escape the bottom of the Champions League table.

FC Porto and PSV Eindhoven meet at the Estádio do Dragão on Tuesday, with both sides desperate to secure their first victory of the Champions League league phase and revive their European campaigns.

Porto have lost their opening two fixtures and sit 30th in the 36-team standings, while PSV have collected just one point from their first two matches. Both clubs enter the contest under pressure, although their contrasting domestic form makes this an intriguing encounter.

Match Preview

Porto return to the Champions League main stage after a two-year absence, having won the Portuguese championship last season. Francesco Farioli’s side have continued that domestic momentum, winning their opening eight Primeira Liga matches to establish a five-point lead at the top of the table.

Their European performances, however, have been less convincing. Porto lost 2-0 to Manchester City before suffering a dramatic 3-2 defeat against Real Betis. Despite taking a 2-1 lead through Gabriel Veiga and Samu Omorodion, they conceded twice late on, with Cucho Hernández and Isco completing Betis’ comeback.

PSV, meanwhile, arrive in Portugal following consecutive defeats against RB Leipzig and ADO Den Haag. Their 1-0 loss in Germany followed a 1-1 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk, leaving Peter Bosz’s side with little room for further mistakes in Europe.

Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to ADO was particularly damaging. Sven Mijnans scored PSV’s opener before receiving a red card, and the Eindhoven club eventually conceded a late winner. PSV are now four points behind the Eredivisie leaders and have lost their last three away matches.

Bosz’s team must also overcome an unfavourable recent record against Porto. PSV have won just one of their previous four European Cup or Champions League meetings, losing twice and drawing once. Their most recent visit to Porto ended in a 2-2 draw in 1992.

Mijnans is available for European selection despite his domestic suspension, which does not carry over to the Champions League.

Ruben van Bommel will not be available against Porto. The winger was left out of the squad against ADO after experiencing minor physical complaints and has not recovered sufficiently to feature on Tuesday. Instead, PSV are preparing him for Sunday's Eredivisie clash with Feyenoord
