The Dutch champions secured Ayoni Santos in a multi-million euro deadline deal, adding the creative international playmaker’s elite dribbling and dynamic energy to their title-defending squad.
PSV have completed the signing of Ayoni Santos, with the 21-year-old attacking midfielder becoming the club's sixth new player of the summer transfer window.
Santos joins from Sparta Rotterdam and has signed a five-season contract with the Dutch champions. He will wear the number 35 shirt in Eindhoven.
The deal was completed just before the transfer deadline, bringing an end to several tense days for the young midfielder. As reported by PSV Watcher Rik Elfrink of Eindhovens Dagblad, PSV will pay Sparta €4.75 million, with a further €500,000 potentially due in bonuses.
“Those were exciting days, during which I hoped everything would fall into place in time,” Santos smiles after signing his contract. “I’m incredibly proud that I can now call myself a player for the best club in the Netherlands. The next step is to show on the field what I’m capable of. I’d describe myself as a fast player with strong dribbling skills, who’s good at winning the ball and has great game sense. Ultimately, I hope to become a starter and, of course, win trophies.”
Santos Brings Youth and Potential
Santos came through Sparta's youth academy before breaking into the first team last season. Despite having only 32 official appearances at senior level, his performances were enough to convince PSV's technical staff that he possesses the qualities required to develop further at the highest level.
The midfielder has also already made his debut for the Cape Verde national team, adding international experience to his growing profile.
PSV's decision to move for Santos reflects their belief that the player still has considerable room to develop.
“Ayoni is a creative and dynamic player, strong in one-on-one situations and possessing the energy and intensity we’re looking for,” says Director of Football Operations Earnest Stewart. “Although he’s already playing at a high level, we believe there’s still plenty of room for growth in his development. That’s why we made a conscious decision to bring him to PSV now. We’re convinced that Ayoni has a bright future ahead of him.”
Stewart also highlighted the qualities that convinced PSV to act before the transfer deadline, particularly Santos' creativity, dynamism and ability in one-on-one situations.
'I Hope to Become a Starter'
For Santos, the move represents a significant step in his career. After progressing through Sparta's academy and establishing himself in the first team, he now has the opportunity to compete for a place at one of the Netherlands' leading clubs.
The Cape Verde international was open about his ambitions after signing his PSV contract.
“These were tense days, hoping everything would get done in time,” the midfielder said. “Ultimately, I hope to become a regular starter and, of course, win trophies.”
Santos' arrival also comes as Sparta attempt to do business with PSV themselves. The Rotterdam club are simultaneously working on a potential loan move for Isaac Babadi, although whether that deal can be completed remains to be seen.
For PSV, Santos becomes the sixth new arrival of the window and another young player brought into a squad where his development will now continue under Peter Bosz.
