Former PSV striker Sam Lammers is on the verge of returning to Eindhoven, with PSV reaching an agreement with FC Twente over a permanent transfer for the forward.

Lammers was medically examined in Eindhoven on Monday afternoon, according to PSV watcher Rik Elfrink of Eindhovens Dagblad, as the move edges closer to completion.

The 29-year-old had fallen down the pecking order at Twente and had been relegated to the role of third striker, partly because of the arrival of Wout Weghorst. That situation allowed PSV to bring back a player who had previously come through the club's academy.

PSV had been looking to add a third striker to Peter Bosz's squad after Alassane Pléa suffered an injury that is expected to keep the Frenchman out until the end of September.

According to Pieter Zwart of Voetbal International, it is therefore no surprise that PSV ultimately turned to Lammers.

“Given Sam Lammers' profile, it's not strange that PSV ended up with him,” Zwart writes, as quoted by PSV Inside.

The journalist believes Lammers offers a different profile from a traditional goalscoring striker. Rather than simply waiting inside the penalty area, the forward prefers to participate in build-up play and bring teammates into the game.

“Lammers is not a classic striker who lives for goals. He likes to play on the ball to be involved in the combination play and therefore sometimes isn’t in the penalty area to turn in crosses,” Zwart continues.

Lammers' ability to drop deeper and combine with teammates is also considered particularly suitable for Bosz's positional approach.

“Lammers is of great value in the positional play. He is completely two-footed and has above-average game insight. The forward trained at PSV has a good eye for making runs for his teammates. Lammers fits well into Bosz's football, in which the idea is that midfielders with their faces toward goal are freed up under a passing striker”, the reporter says.

That could have a direct impact on players such as Guus Til and Sven Mijnans, who can attack the spaces created when Lammers moves away from the central striker position.

“For Guus Til and Sven Mijnans, his arrival is therefore great news. They will be able to dive into the spaces that Lammers creates at the tip of the attack. For a deep-lying wing striker like Ruben van Bommel as well, a withdrawing striker is lovely. That is why Lammers is ideally suited to a team that plays dominantly on the opponent's half, as PSV does under Bosz. Then the emphasis is on his greatest quality: carrying the ball forward and putting his teammates into position”, writes the journalist.

Zwart ultimately views Lammers as a logical solution to PSV's current situation, particularly with Pléa unavailable.

“He gives Peter Bosz access to a completely different type up front. With his two-footedness and ability to combine in small spaces, Lammers makes the players around him better. Last season, PSV experienced its best spell with Ismael Saibari alongside Guus Til. Although Lammers does not have Saibari’s qualities, he is nevertheless a player who, just like the Moroccan, can create spaces where Til can dive into them.”

There is another factor working in PSV's favour. Lammers qualifies as homegrown for UEFA competitions, while his situation at Twente made a move possible at a favourable price.

“Moreover, for UEFA competitions he is considered to be homegrown. With the arrival of Wout Weghorst and a expiring contract, Lammers suddenly became available for a good fee. That gives PSV the chance to sign a forward who is good enough for the Eredivisie and fits in with Bosz’s style of play”, Zwart concludes.
