PSV Eindhoven welcome Groningen to the Philips Stadion on Sunday, looking to build on their first competitive win of the 2026-27 campaign.

Peter Bosz’s side faces a Groningen team that has started the league season with two wins from two matches.

PSV finally ended their difficult start last weekend, beating Excelsior 2-1 in Rotterdam after a 4-0 defeat by AZ Alkmaar in the Johan Cruyff Shield and a 2-2 draw against Fortuna Sittard.

The result moved the defending champions onto four points from their opening two Eredivisie matches, but Bosz will demand greater consistency as PSV attempt to maintain their pursuit of a fourth consecutive league title.

There have been significant changes to the squad during the summer. Ismael Saibari has departed for Bayern Munich, while Joey Veerman has recently completed his move to Borussia Dortmund. Those exits have altered the balance of Bosz's midfield, with new signing Kodai Sano now expected to play an increasingly important role.

Bosz has nevertheless been encouraged by what he has seen on the training ground.

“I think so. I can tell from the practices. You can see from the group whether they’re playing with the right intensity and whether the passes are connecting.”

The PSV coach believes that improvement on the training pitch should eventually translate into results.

“If you train well, you’ll get results in the long run.”

New signing Lutsharel Geertruida could make his PSV debut after Bosz confirmed that the defender was registered in time to face Groningen.

The former Feyenoord and RB Leipzig player has been training since early July and is considered close to full fitness.

“If a player has been training with a group since early July, then they’re usually in shape.”

Filip Kostić, however, may have to wait longer for his first appearance. The Serbian has been training individually and must adapt to the intensity of group work.

“Kostic is Ivan-like in his obsession with training. He always wants more and has a strong build. So he’ll be fit faster than most, but playing in matches is still something else entirely.”

PSV remain without Jerdy Schouten, while Alassane Pléa is expected to miss around six weeks. Couhaib Driouech and Noah Fernandez are also doubts.

Ricardo Pepi and Ruben van Bommel will provide the main attacking threat, with Ivan Perišić offering width and experience.

Groningen arrive in Eindhoven with six points from six. Dick Lukkien's side have beaten their first two opponents and scored four goals in their most recent victory over ADO Den Haag.

Thom van Bergen has been particularly influential, contributing two goals and an assist. Brynjolfur Darri Willumsson has also scored twice, while David van der Werff has impressed from wide areas.

Lukkien's team will, however, have to overcome a difficult recent record against PSV. Groningen have lost their last five meetings with the champions and have suffered nine defeats in their last 10 encounters.

Their last victory at the Philips Stadion came in March 2014. Since then, they have failed to win in 11 visits and have been shut out six times.

Marco Rente remains doubtful, while Tyrique Mercera, Ryan Metu, Oskar Zawada and Malcolm Jeng are unavailable.
