Sami Ouaissa’s recovery stalls as Sam Lammers remains sidelined, exposing the recurring fitness struggles plaguing PSV’s late summer arrivals and testing Peter Bosz’s depth during a critical period.

PSV have suffered another setback with late summer signing Sami Ouaissa, who requires further medical assessment after missing Jong PSV’s 7-0 victory over Ipswich Town Under-21s on Tuesday.

The winger had appeared close to returning to full fitness after making his comeback for Jong PSV against FC Dordrecht last week. However, he was not fit enough to feature in the international fixture, raising fresh questions about when he will be available again.

As reported by PSV Watcher Rik Elfrink of Eindhovens Dagblad, Ouaissa is scheduled to undergo further medical assessment on Wednesday. As of Tuesday, it remained too early to determine the outcome, leaving PSV waiting for greater clarity on his condition.

The latest setback means the winger has still not made an appearance for the PSV first team in eight weeks, with his progress continuing to be disrupted since his arrival in Eindhoven in early September.

Sam Lammers Also Remains Unavailable

Ouaissa is not the only late summer arrival struggling to become available for Peter Bosz. Striker Sam Lammers, who joined PSV on September 2, has also endured a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

PSV initially expected Lammers to need only a few weeks to regain his fitness, but he has now been unavailable for almost two months. His last competitive appearance came on August 20, when FC Twente lost at home to Qarabag.

There was some encouragement last week when Lammers took part in group training with Jong PSV. However, he was not ready to be included in the matchday squad for the fixture against Feyenoord.

Given that he played only one full half of football in July, Lammers is expected to require additional time before reaching full match fitness. His absence has also left Bosz short of the desired backup option at centre-forward on several occasions in recent weeks.

A Familiar Problem With Late Arrivals

PSV’s difficulties with Ouaissa and Lammers continue a pattern that has emerged in recent seasons, with several players arriving towards the end of the transfer window struggling to settle into the team or meet expectations.

Armel Bella-Kotchap, Tyrell Malacia and Adamo Nagalo are among the previous examples. However, the trend is not universal, with Ivan Perišić’s late arrival proving a successful move for PSV.

There is no single explanation for why late signings sometimes struggle. Players who miss pre-season with their new club may need time to adapt to different training methods, physical demands and expectations. That adjustment can affect their readiness and ability to contribute immediately.

Ouaissa’s latest setback and Lammers’ prolonged absence have therefore presented PSV with an unwelcome challenge, particularly as the season progresses and squad availability becomes increasingly important.

Summer Recruitment Still Delivering Results

Despite the problems surrounding the two forwards, PSV’s summer recruitment has already produced several positive results.

Kodai Sano and Lutsharel Geertruida have established themselves as valuable additions, while Filip Kostić and Sven Mijnans have also made significant contributions. All four have recently featured regularly or played important roles in the first-team setup.

Their performances underline the value PSV have gained from the transfer window, even as the club continues to wait for Ouaissa and Lammers to become fully available.

The immediate priority is to establish the extent of Ouaissa’s latest fitness problem, with Wednesday’s medical assessment expected to provide greater clarity. For Lammers, the focus remains on building fitness after his extended absence.

Until both forwards are ready to contribute, PSV will have to manage their attacking options carefully as they look to maintain their challenge across the season.
