Steven Bergwijn has emerged as a topic of discussion at PSV, with Ronald Waterreus insisting that people should not view the former winger negatively. The debate comes as PSV continues to strengthen a defence that is still a concern.

PSV's transfer plans remain focused on strengthening the squad, with Lutsharel Geertruida still the club's principal defensive target.

However, former PSV goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus believes one signing would not be enough to address the problems that have persisted at the back.

Geertruida is also attracting interest from Ajax, leaving PSV's pursuit of the former Feyenoord defender uncertain. Waterreus believes the Eindhoven club must look beyond one player.

Waterreus: Geertruida Won't Solve Everything

Speaking on the Skiete Willy Podcast from Voetbal International as quoted by PSV Inside, Waterreus pointed to PSV's defensive record as evidence that the issue is deeper than an individual signing.

“He went along as the 26th player to the World Cup. Geertruida alone doesn’t solve all of PSV’s problems. That the defense is too fragile; that has proven to be a structural issue. And that defending starts up front is also a great story, but last season we conceded 45 goals.”

Journalist Marco Timmer subsequently suggested that PSV's concentration on Geertruida reminded him of the club's previous pursuit of Sepp van den Berg.

“I know that Geertruida is currently fifty-fifty, but I do get a Sepp van den Berg vibe from him. PSV is focusing a lot on one man.”

Timmer also raised the possibility of Davinson Sánchez, who previously worked with PSV head coach Peter Bosz.

“There is also talk of that, that there is interest. But is that interest something you can get for that amount?”

Waterreus again stressed that PSV cannot expect one arrival to transform its defence.

“One player isn’t enough to suddenly fix everything. And that is not a disqualification of Geertruida, because he is an international. But the defensive problem is not solved if he comes. The problem is too structural for that.”

Bergwijn Return Also On The Agenda

The discussion then turned towards another familiar name: Steven Bergwijn.

The former PSV winger could leave his Saudi Arabian club this summer after a productive spell, while reports have suggested that he may be available for a relatively modest fee.

For Waterreus, there would be no reason to treat Bergwijn's potential return as controversial.

“We shouldn’t pretend he did something wrong.”

The former goalkeeper believes Bergwijn could be particularly useful if PSV lose another winger.

“If Bajraktarovic goes, you do need a winger. He’s always welcome at the club, but this kind of stuff shouldn’t happen when they can still barely walk.”

The comments underline two separate issues facing PSV: the need for greater defensive depth and the possibility of further movement in attack.

While Geertruida remains the club's focus, Waterreus' assessment suggests PSV's recruitment work may need to extend beyond the Dutch international if the club wants to build a more balanced squad.
