Despite Patrick Dorgu playing further forward towards the end of last season, signing a left-winger seems to be on United's wishlist this summer.
While Manchester United's summer priority will be on rebuilding their midfield after Casemiro's exit at the end of the season, left-winger is seemingly a position of focus, too.
Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu shared the role after Michael Carrick took over from Rúben Amorim, but neither is natural in the position, which has led to more links to left-wingers this summer.
Marcus Rashford could yet have a part to play in Dorgu's future position at Old Trafford, as Barcelona chose not to activate their £26 million buy option at the end of the season. Hansi Flick's side has since signed Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon.
Yan Diomande, who was heavily linked to United during the season, now seems destined to sign for Liverpool, so Michael Carrick's side will have to reassess their targets.
United's left-wing targets
One player who has been linked with a move to United for some time is Everton forward Illiman Ndiaye.
In March, Roundtable revealed that Ndiaye was high on United's list of left-wingers, and that appears to still be the case after a report from Ben Jacobs, via The United Stand.
Ndiaye and LOSC Lille's Matias Fernandez Pardo are expected to be options for United this summer, with United looking to sign both a left-winger and a left-back if Marcus Rashford leave the club, despite Dorgu playing further forward under Carrick.
West Ham United's Crysencio Summerville is also on the list of left-wing options, but Tottenham Hotspur have registered their interest, too.
The Hammers are expected to demand £40-50 million, despite being relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season.
Should United focus on a left-wing or a left-back?
While the report states that United would like to sign players in both positions this summer, the midfield rebuild could force Director of Football Jason Wilcox to focus on just one of the two positions. Patrick Dorgu would likely be asked to play the other role.
Luke Shaw is United's first-choice left-back, as it stands, although he is unlikely to be able to play as many matches next season as he did last season. The England international started all 38 Premier League matches last season, but he will also be used in the Champions League, and an injury seems likely if he is to play every game.
Not including Dorgu, United's backup left-backs are young Harry Amass and Diego Leon, neither of whom has enough senior experience to be considered regular starters at Old Trafford.
On the other hand, Cunha is not a natural left-winger, and signing a player who is natural in the position could add a new dynamic to United's attack.
Rashford could be that left-sided attacker, but he seems likely to leave Old Trafford, despite Barcelona not activating their buy option.
