Ajax are working to sign a defender from La Liga as the club looks to replace Josip Sutalo and Ko Itakura.
Ajax are working to sign a new right-footed central defender before the transfer window closes on 2 September.
Three centre-backs have already left Ajax so far this summer, and a fourth could leave before the transfer window closes.
Josip Sutalo has moved to Serie A club Lazio on a season-long loan. The Italian club also have the option to sign the Croatian defender on a permanent transfer at the end of the season.
Ko Itakura has also returned to Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Japanese defender struggled to find form in Amsterdam and left after just one season.
Ahmetcan Kaplan, who spent last season on loan at NEC Nijmegen, has signed permanently for the club after a successful loan spell.
Youri Baas could still leave, too. Porto made an offer which was swiftly rejected by Ajax. There are other clubs still interested, such as Eintracht Frankfurt, who reportedly have him on their shortlist as they look to strengthen their defence.
Ajax keen on Boyomo
Aaron Bouwman is Ajax's only right-footed centre-back, and the club therefore wants to sign a player of that profile.
Osasuna's Enzo Boyomo is the centre-back Ajax are reportedly looking to sign.
According to Diaro AS, Osasuna has rejected Ajax's opening offer for Boyomo. Ajax proposed a loan deal, but Osasuna wants a permanent transfer.
The report from Diaro AS claims that Boyomo has a €25 million release clause, and Osasuna hopes to recoup slightly more than half that amount.
Speaking to Marca, Braulio Vázquez, Osasuna's sporting director, confirmed Ajax's interest in Boyomo and also revealed that he does not want the Cameroonian defender to leave.
"Enzo has significant value. With 30 hours left in the transfer window, even if the offer were substantial, we wouldn't consider it because we believe that beyond the financial aspect, we need to see the best Enzo back. That's why teams like Ajax want him," Vázquez explained.
"I hope he stays so we can have the best possible team."
Centre-back is the final area Ajax must strengthen
Ajax's summer rebuild is almost done, and the centre-back position is the final area Jordi Cruijff still needs to strengthen. Ajax may also still sign a midfielder, but that would be more of a luxury signing.
Ajax have finally signed a new defensive midfielder, with Sofyan Amrabat moving to Amsterdam on a free transfer.
A deal is also in place for Simon Adingra to move to Ajax on loan for one season. The transfer is expected to be completed soon, and he will replace Mika Godts on the left wing.
Ajax have been extremely ambitious this summer, and the squad looks good to challenge for domestic and European success.
