PSV’s 3-1 victory over Ajax in Amsterdam has attracted widespread attention across Europe.

Spanish, German, Italian and Belgian outlets highlighted the champions’ strong first half and their ability to withstand Ajax before securing an emphatic away win.

PSV’s impressive start to the Eredivisie season has once again placed the club under the international spotlight.

With the Eindhoven side regularly competing in the Champions League, their performances are closely followed beyond the Netherlands. Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Ajax at the Johan Cruijff Arena quickly generated reactions from media outlets across Europe, with Spanish, German and Belgian publications among those assessing the result.

The international press largely agreed on one point: PSV made the most of an open and entertaining first half before managing the game more effectively after the interval.

The result represented an important setback for Ajax and new head coach Míchel Sánchez. It was the first official defeat of Sánchez’s tenure, while PSV ended a run of five consecutive meetings without a victory against their Amsterdam rivals.

Spanish outlets Marca and Diario AS focused on Ajax’s inability to take advantage of the opportunities they created.

“Ajax lost to PSV in a match in which the chances were not taken”, Marca and Diario AS conclude, as relayed by PSV Inside.

The Spanish publications also pointed to the defensive problems that continue to face Sánchez's side despite a significant summer investment.

“Ajax has invested heavily in new players and the team’s leadership has been handed to Míchel. He can’t perform miracles in record time, though. Again, a very weak defense cost Ajax the match. It was the first defeat under Míchel, and he still has a lot of work to do.”

The assessment reflected the nature of the contest. Ajax had opportunities during an entertaining opening period but PSV ultimately proved more clinical before controlling the match in the second half.

Belgian outlet Het Nieuwsblad also highlighted PSV’s start to the contest and their physical superiority.

“PSV won Saturday's top match of the fifth matchday in the Eredivisie easily against rival Ajax. The Eindhoven side thus put an end to a run of five head-to-head matches without a win against the club from the capital.”

In Germany, BILD described the result as a significant setback for Ajax, writing:

“PSV deals a major blow to Ajax in Amsterdam.”

Kicker also referenced Julian Brandt’s performance while underlining Ajax’s defeat in the fixture:

“Brandt played okay, but Ajax loses the duel with PSV.”

Meanwhile, Frankfurter Allgemeine emphasised that the match remained competitive for much of the evening before PSV eventually secured the points.

“The top match between Ajax and PSV remained exciting for a long time, before the reigning champions secured the away win.”

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo gave particular attention to Sánchez suffering his first defeat as Ajax manager.

“The reigning champions PSV surged into the Johan Cruyff Arena and won De Topper, thereby temporarily taking the top spot on the league table.”

The result therefore carried significance beyond the three points. PSV demonstrated their ability to produce a decisive performance away against one of their principal title rivals, while Ajax were left with questions about their defensive organisation and Sánchez’s rebuilding project.

For PSV, the 3-1 victory also provided an early statement in the Eredivisie title race. Their performance in Amsterdam has now attracted attention well beyond Dutch football, with the international press closely watching whether Peter Bosz’s side can maintain their domestic dominance while competing on the European stage.
