Brent Venables secures a formidable foundation with 26 verbal commitments, anchored by five-star corner Gabriel Osborne Jr. and a physical offensive front built for SEC dominance
The Oklahoma Sooners’ 2027 recruiting class is starting to take real shape. While it’s taken a few ranking hits over the last couple months, this group still has serious talent and depth.
Brent Venables and his staff have 26 verbal commitments right now, and the class currently sits at No. 4 on On3 and Rivals, as well as 247Sports. That’s still a very solid spot this late in the cycle.
The headliners are impressive. You’ve got five-star cornerback Gabriel Osborne Jr. out of Mustang leading the way as the clear star of the class. On the offensive line, 5-star Kaeden Penny and 4-star Cooper Hackett give you two big, athletic pieces up front who should develop nicely under Bill Bedenbaugh.
The linebacker group features 4-star Cooper Witten (who brings that family connection with his dad Jason now on staff) and 4-star Taven Epps. One of the more exciting recent additions is 4-star ATH Bode Sparrow, a dynamic two-way playmaker who can really go get the football on either side of the ball. He gives the class another high-upside athlete who should contribute in a lot of different ways.
The secondary is looking especially strong with four-star CB Mikhail McCreary, four-star safety Jaylen Scott, and now four-star safety Bode Sparrow joining three-star corners Mikyal Davis and Trenton Blaylock (Tory’s little brother). That defensive back room is going to have some real competition and depth coming in.
On offense, you’ve got four-star tight end Seneca Driver, four-star running back Keldrid Ben, and four-star EDGE Krew Jones who can flip over and rush the passer.
They also added some depth pieces at receiver with Greydon Howell and Malahn Green, plus young quarterback Noah Smith to develop behind 3-star Jamison Roberts.
What stands out is the balance. Oklahoma has quality across the trenches with multiple offensive and defensive linemen, good skill talent, and solid depth at linebacker and secondary. Yes, some prospects have seen rating drops (Hackett and Roberts especially), but rankings fluctuate all the time, especially when guys miss time with injuries or haven’t had their senior season yet.
This class still has time to climb back up. With 26 commits already in the boat, the Sooners have done a nice job of volume while mixing in blue-chip talent. Venables and GM Jim Nagy have kept the train rolling even as other programs made late pushes.
The 2027 group still has a real chance to end up as one of the stronger classes of the Venables era. It won’t be the historic No. 1 group we were talking about back in March, but it’s a very respectable haul that addresses a lot of key areas. The Sooners' staff has to also do everything in their power to keep this class intact between now and signing day.
Once these kids get on campus, get in the strength program, and start competing every day, a lot of the current three-stars have the traits to develop into solid contributors.
