Dismissing his rivals' massive summer recruitment, the Eindhoven boss insists his squad remains the Eredivisie's elite, prioritizing strategic renewal and key retentions over Amsterdam's heavy spending spree.
Peter Bosz remains convinced that PSV have the strongest squad in the Netherlands despite Ajax's extensive recruitment this summer.
The PSV head coach made the claim after a busy transfer window in Eindhoven, insisting that his side still have the quality required to compete for another Eredivisie title.
Bosz made the comments during an appearance on Masterclass: The Secret of Peter Bosz on Omroep Brabant. The coach was a guest at the Muziekgebouw in Eindhoven, where presenter Marcel van Herpen put a series of challenging questions to him. The programme will be broadcast from next week.
With the transfer window now closed, Bosz reflected on PSV's summer business and immediately highlighted the decision to tie down Amir Bouhamdi to a new long-term contract.
“I would like to start with the contract extension of Amir Bouhamdi. He is doing very well and we are happy that we can keep such good players,” Bosz said, as quoted by PSV Inside.
Lammers arrival explained
PSV added several players during the summer, including Sven Mijnans, Kodai Sano, Filip Kostić, Lutsharel Geertruida and Sam Lammers.
Lammers returned to Eindhoven from FC Twente as PSV looked to strengthen their options in attack following the injury suffered by Alassane Pléa.
“We especially did that because Alassane Pléa got injured and the question is how he will come back,” Bosz explained.
The club also said goodbye to two important members of last season's squad, with Ismael Saibari and Joey Veerman leaving PSV.
Bosz does not necessarily view the departures as a negative, arguing that even successful teams can benefit from change.
“Nowadays we say: 'Ever change a winning team.' Sir Alex Ferguson left Manchester United every few years after getting into arguments with his best players or selling them. Now I’m not a troublemaker, but we do see that renewal can also be a good thing,” he said.
Bosz: “I think we have again the best squad”
Ajax were among the most active Dutch clubs in the transfer market, investing heavily in strengthening their squad. Nevertheless, Bosz believes PSV remain ahead when it comes to the overall strength of their squad.
“I think we have again the best squad in the Netherlands. I really mean that. And I also try to convey that to the players,” the PSV coach said.
However, Bosz was careful to distinguish between having the strongest squad on paper and actually winning the championship.
“That doesn’t mean that we automatically become champions. We still have to show it.”
PSV will now attempt to translate their summer recruitment into another successful campaign, with Bosz tasked with integrating the new arrivals while maintaining the standards that have delivered domestic success in recent seasons.
